Briefings

Portuguese Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated the US seeks a fair opportunity for Lockheed Martin to present a competitive proposal for replacing Portugal's aging F-16s, though the formal selection process has not yet begun. Four companies have already positioned themselves for the F-16 renewal, with Lockheed Martin currently leading the market. The decision remains military and not political, as the Portuguese government decides solely based on national interest. Geopolitical tensions within NATO, particularly regarding US strategic interests in the Indo-Pacific, are influencing the choice, alongside EU pressure for European defense autonomy. The procurement is estimated at approximately 5 million euros.
