Briefings
Twelve countries, including Brazil, approved a resolution to begin drafting the world's first international protocol against environmental crime. The protocol aims to streamline investigations and prosecutions for wildlife trafficking, illegal deforestation, and illicit waste smuggling. Negotiations are scheduled to commence under the UNTOC framework, with the draft expected to be finalized over the next two years. The resolution passed with a two-thirds majority, though the U.S. and Japan voted against it. The initiative was championed by a global policy specialist from the Wildlife Conservation Society.
