Briefings
Indigenous youth in Canada are suing the government for failing to protect their health due to climate change, citing a specific case where a Tlingit First Nation member could not harvest Labrador shrubs. The five-week trial begins Oct 26, 2026, in Vancouver, involving 14 plaintiffs including Reeves, who found no Labrador plants despite knowing where to look. The plaintiffs argue the government's fossil fuel support and net-zero plan infringe on their Section 7 rights.
Key points
- A Tlingit First Nation member named Reeves, 22, could not find Labrador shrubs in the boreal forest despite knowing where to look, leading to a lawsuit against Canada.
- The plaintiffs include 14 Indigenous youth suing Canada for failing to protect their health from climate change impacts on natural resources.
