Briefings

The Greek Parliament approved a law banning social media access for minors under 15 starting January 1, 2026. The conservative government's New Democracy party secured the absolute majority in the lower house. The law extends beyond social media platforms, requiring all platforms to verify user age independently. Greece's Digital Minister Dimitris Papastergiou proposed using state tools like the Kids Wallet for verification, though this remains optional. France previously passed a similar measure but had it overturned by the Constitutional Court.

Key points

• A Greek law prohibits social media access for all minors under 15 starting January 1, 2026.
• The law extends to all platforms, requiring independent age verification regardless of account creation date.

Context

The Greek government, led by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, introduced the measure via the New Democracy party. France previously passed a similar law in July 2025 but had it annulled by the Constitutional Court.
