Briefings
A Thai wildlife rescue center in Khon Kaen has admitted 65 leopard cat cubs annually since 2023, with 60 recovered from charred fields in January-August 2026. Mortality rates dropped to 33% in 2026 from 60% previously, driven by improved health checks and specialized 24-square-meter enclosures. The center treats burns, infections, and nutritional deficiencies before rehabilitation, noting that keeping wild cats at home is illegal and exposes them to domestic diseases.
Key points
- The Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation in Khon Kaen admitted 65 leopard cat cubs annually between January and August 2026, a significant increase from the average of about 10 cats per year before 2023.
- Mortality rates at the facility dropped to 33% in 2026, compared to 60% in previous years, attributed to better health checks for feline immunodeficiency virus, parvovirus, and other conditions before rehabilitation.
Context
This finding addresses habitat fragmentation and agricultural burning in northeastern Thailand, which displaced the cubs. The center's success relies on strict adherence to laws prohibiting keeping wild cats at home, ensuring specialized care and preventing disease transmission from domestic animals.
Limitations
Data covers only January-August 2026; annual admissions are estimated rather than precisely tracked. Mortality rates are reported by center officials and may vary by season. No specific city, region, or country beyond Khon Kaen is confirmed as the primary location for the study.
