Briefings
A Hong Kong biologist and conservationist partnered with an arborist to install 15 artificial nest boxes for yellow-crested cockatoos, addressing a housing crisis caused by over 60% loss of natural tree hollows. The project, launched in March 2025, uses Australian prototypes modified for humid climates and includes internal cameras for remote monitoring. Local students are involved in the initiative, and the city's population remains stable due to legal protection, though the birds face severe habitat loss.
Key points
- Astrid Andersson, a biologist at the University of Hong Kong, led the project to address a housing crisis for yellow-crested cockatoos due to over 60% loss of natural tree hollows.
- The project launched in March 2025 installed 15 artificial nest boxes across public parks and school campuses, including St. Louis School and ISF Academy.
Context
The yellow-crested cockatoo is critically endangered with fewer than 2,000 individuals remaining in eastern Indonesia and Timor-Leste. Hong Kong hosts roughly 200 wild cockatoos, believed to be descendants of escaped pets, with strict legal protection preventing natural population decline.
Limitations
The evidence is limited to a single article from Mongabay published on 2026-10-28. The project's long-term impact, effectiveness of the cameras, and future expansion beyond the initial 15 installations are not documented. The source does not provide data on specific breeding success rates or population growth metrics.
