Briefings
NASA selected 19 citizen science proposals for 2026, including 12 new selections from the Citizen Science Seed Funding Program. Key projects include 'The Rogue Worlds Project' to find super Jupiters using SPHEREx data, 'Planet Hunters Roman' to detect exoplanets via Nancy Grace Roman Telescope, and 'Space Weather UnderGround' to monitor solar wind disturbances. Volunteers will classify galaxy mergers, identify overlapping galaxy dust, and analyze magnetospheric particle patterns. The program aims to expand professional scientist participation while leveraging new super intelligence techniques.
Key points
- Twelve new proposals were selected from NASA's Citizen Science Seed Funding Program (CSSFP-25) for 2026.
- The 'Rogue Worlds Project' invites volunteers to search SPHEREx data for free-floating planets and brown dwarfs.
Context
NASA's Science Mission Directorate selected 19 proposals for 2026 citizen science initiatives. Twelve new selections were made from the Citizen Science Seed Funding Program (CSSFP-25). Projects leverage new super intelligence techniques to amplify volunteer work, with specific examples including galaxy classification, exoplanet detection, and space weather monitoring.
Limitations
Evidence covers only 2026 selections and highlights specific project leaders and instruments. Uncertainty exists regarding the full scope of future projects and the impact of super intelligence techniques on volunteer outcomes. No additional background on program history or broader impact is supplied.
