Briefings
GitHub Octoverse 2026 report reveals a dramatic surge in coding activity driven by agentic engineering, with merged pull requests tripling to 220 million monthly and commits exceeding 7.38 billion monthly. The study adjusts for VPN usage and classifies contributions by ISO country codes, while analyzing repository creation trends and specific mentions of interoperability or reverse engineering across 2022-2026.
Key points
- Merged pull requests increased by 300% in 2026, reaching 220 million per month, with the majority of this growth occurring in the second half of the year.
- Commits surged by over 300% to 7.38 billion per month, driven primarily by the second half of 2026, alongside a doubling of new repository creation to 30.3 million per month.
Context
The GitHub Octoverse 2026 report analyzes coding activity trends from 2022 to 2026, adjusting for VPN usage and classifying contributions by ISO country codes. It examines repository creation by NAICS sector and specifically tracks repositories mentioning interoperability or reverse engineering.
Limitations
Data covers only the period 2022-2026, with specific numbers for 2026 limited to the second half of the year. The methodology relies on LLM classification for country codes and a fine-tuned multilingual embedding model for sector analysis, introducing potential classification bias.
