Briefings

Five opposition parties in Portugal are debating whether to demand permanent pension increases in the upcoming 2027 budget, despite the government's stance on maintaining stability. The ECO weekly report highlights specific proposals from the PCP, Bloco de Esquerda, Livre, PAN, and Chega, which call for minimum 50 euros, 50% absorption of the December bonus, 40 euros, and 3x IAS respectively. The government, led by Prime Minister Luís Montenegro, has rejected these demands, citing the need to balance protecting low-income pensions with budget sustainability, though the opposition remains active in pressuring the executive.
