Briefings
South Africa's bilateral trade with China surged to nearly $15 billion between May and August 2026, marking a 24% year-on-year increase. This growth follows a zero-tariff agreement signed in 2025, which is the primary driver of the observed trade expansion.
Key points
- Bilateral trade between South Africa and China reached $15 billion during the May-August 2026 period.
- Trade volume increased by 24% compared to the same period in the previous year.
Context
The trade surge is attributed to a 2025 agreement that eliminated tariffs, creating a favorable environment for increased commerce between the two nations.
Limitations
Data covers only May-August 2026; the specific impact of the 2025 agreement on long-term trends remains unverified.
