Briefings
NASA Earth Observatory captured a wide-angle view of the eastern United States on October 18, 2026, at 4:54 a.m. Central Daylight Time, showing illuminated cities like Chicago and Detroit against a dark landscape. An astronaut aboard the International Space Station seized the moment to photograph the scene using a Nikon Z9 camera with a 14mm focal length. The image reveals airglow along the horizon and sunrise occurring approximately one hour east of the viewer's location. Researchers analyzed the photo to distinguish lighting types, noting Chicago's lightscape appears homogeneous pale yellow in wide views but contains diverse colors in detailed shots. The image was acquired from the ISS Expedition 75 crew and enhanced for contrast, with lens artifacts removed.
