Briefings
A Bangladeshi laborer named Maksudur Rahman was recruited into Russia's war effort in 2025, signed a contract in Russian he could not read, and faced threats of violence and ten-year jail terms. He was part of a larger pattern where Russia faces a severe labor shortage, has depleted its prisoner recruitment, and is actively targeting South Asian nations like Bangladesh, Nepal, and Sri Lanka for undocumented workers. The article highlights that while Russia offers high signing bonuses and debt write-offs, the recruitment pipeline involves deception, coercion, and the disappearance of legal protections for migrants.
Key points
- Maksudur Rahman, a 31-year-old Bangladeshi worker from Lakshmipur district, signed a Russian-language contract in 2025 after being offered a job as a janitor in Russia.
- Russia faces a critical labor shortage with contract service enrollment dropping 20% in Q1 2026 and officials expecting a 3.1 million worker shortfall by 2030.
Context
Russia's war in Ukraine has created a severe manpower deficit, with contract service enrollment down 20% in the first quarter of 2026 compared to the same period last year. The country has exhausted its prisoner recruitment and is actively targeting South Asian nations like Bangladesh, Nepal, and Sri Lanka for undocumented workers, with at least 300,000 Russian deaths recorded since the war began in February 2022.
Limitations
Evidence covers only one Bangladeshi worker's experience and does not include data on Nepal or Sri Lanka recruitment numbers. The article relies on international reporting relayed by Ukrainian outlets and local obituaries, which may not be fully verified. Specific details on the exact number of Nepali or Sri Lankan recruits are not provided, and the timeline of the recruitment pipeline is not fully detailed.
