Briefings

A live interview with FlexGen CEO Kelcy Pegler and COO Hugh Scott discusses how the AI buildout is driving unprecedented demand for battery storage, transforming the industry from renewable energy to a critical data center infrastructure component. The conversation covers design integration, software control, and market projections, highlighting FlexGen's sudden surge in data center orders as a key indicator of this shift.

Key points

• FlexGen CEO Kelcy Pegler stated that the AI buildout is the most capital-intensive project in history, driving demand for unconventional power solutions including jet engines and hybrid microgrids.
• Data center customers are now the primary driver for FlexGen's order book, with the company's CEO noting that the data center community makes them appear more patient than the renewable energy sector.

Context

This Frontier Forum explores how the AI buildout is reshaping the energy landscape, specifically through the rapid adoption of battery storage for managing volatile AI workloads. The discussion features FlexGen, a battery integrator whose order book has filled with data center customers, illustrating the direct link between AI demand and energy infrastructure needs.

Limitations

The evidence is limited to a single live interview with FlexGen executives. Specific order volumes, financial figures, or long-term market forecasts are not provided. The conversation covers design and software aspects but does not detail specific regional deployments or government policies.
