Briefings

A new runtime routing protocol named R2-PQF enables Fault-Tolerant Quantum Computing (FTQC) using surface codes by dynamically resolving circuit paths during execution. Implemented on 500MHz FPGA and 2 GHz ASIC, the protocol achieves a median logical time-step of 1.51 microseconds for a 300 qubit Ising Hamiltonian circuit, significantly outperforming baseline stalling-based solutions by up to 1.76 times.

Key points

• The protocol R2-PQF uses Wavefront Breadth-First Search (W-BFS) to dynamically route gates layer-by-layer during execution, avoiding the need for static compile-time routing.
• R2-PQF successfully resolves the vast majority of paths for a 300 qubit Ising Hamiltonian circuit within the strict computational window of lattice surgery, enabling T-count benefits without latency penalties.

Context

This finding addresses a critical bottleneck in Fault-Tolerant Quantum Computing where probabilistic Quantum Circuit with Fallback (PQF) synthesis lowers T-counts but introduces high circuit dynamism. Standard protocols like Gridsynth fail because new T gates require dynamic routing, and the current solution R2-PQF successfully resolves this by enabling runtime computation on FPGA and ASIC hardware.

Limitations

The evidence is limited to a single clock cycle of 2GHz on a 300 qubit Ising Hamiltonian circuit. The protocol's performance on larger circuits or different hardware architectures remains unverified, and the median time-step of 1.51 microseconds is specific to this test case.
