Briefings

Marissa Mayer, former Yahoo CEO, publicly dismissed gender as irrelevant in tech while discussing AI and her daughter. She stated she never plays the 'gender card' and claims passion overrides gender, despite her company Dazzle analyzing life from photos. This stance contrasts sharply with the reality of declining tech conferences for women, such as the canceled Grace Hopper Celebration, which saw registration and sponsorship far below expectations and caused significant distress to attendees.

Key points

• Marissa Mayer stated she never plays the 'gender card' and claims passion overrides gender, despite her company Dazzle analyzing life from photos.
• The Grace Hopper Celebration conference was canceled in 2026 due to registration and sponsorship issues, resulting in significantly below expectations and causing distress to attendees.

Context

Marissa Mayer's comments on gender in tech contrast with the reality of declining tech conferences for women, such as the canceled Grace Hopper Celebration, which saw registration and sponsorship far below expectations and caused significant distress to attendees.

Limitations

Evidence is limited to Mayer's 2015 interview and a 2026 New York Times report. Data on conference cancellations and attendee impact is reported by organizers and attendees, with uncertainty regarding future 2027 events. Specific numbers for conference attendance and funding are provided but lack broader industry context.
