Briefings

A debate on the 2026 National Day of the Press in Portugal focused on media giants losing control over AI content. Key figures included Carlos Eugénio (Visapress), Nuno Francisco (Jornal da Fundação), Carlos Rodrigues (Medialivre), and James Hewes. The core finding is that major platforms like Meta and Google are losing strategic advantages and face legal risks regarding AI training data, with no regulatory mechanism in Portugal to enforce fair remuneration for editorial content.

Key points

• Carlos Eugénio, director of Visapress, stated that the current legal framework for media rights is the only viable method to protect content in the digital age, especially for AI development.
• Meta altered its corporate terms without notice, raising concerns about collecting journalistic content for AI training, which Carlos Eugénio described as a 'pure and harsh' policy change.

Context

The discussion occurred at the 2026 National Day of the Press, an annual event organized by the Portuguese Association of the Press (API) featuring media executives and strategists. The event highlighted the structural shift in the media landscape where traditional 'dinossauros' like Google and Meta are facing new competitors, particularly in the AI sector.

Limitations

Evidence is limited to a single article from October 2026. Specific details about the exact negotiation dates with Google are not provided, and the article does not contain quotes from the AI companies themselves regarding their AI strategy.
