Briefings

US forces allegedly 'weaponized' Somalia's floods by directing airstrikes toward civilians trapped in the path of El Niño rising waters. A mother named Ali in Jilib, Somalia, describes constant drone attacks forcing her family to flee alongside the River Juba, which had already reached her waist. The town of Jilib was under attack, leaving no safe refuge as the water threatened to flood their home five meters from the river. The article notes that the water rose rapidly and that the airstrikes were coordinated against al-Shabaab territory, though the intent remains unconfirmed.

Key points

• US forces allegedly 'weaponized' Somalia's floods by directing airstrikes toward civilians trapped in the path of El Niño rising waters.
• A mother named Ali in Jilib, Somalia, describes constant drone attacks forcing her family to flee alongside the River Juba, which had already reached her waist.

Context

The article reports on a specific incident in southern Somalia where rising water levels from El Niño forced civilians to seek refuge near the River Juba. Coordinated airstrikes on al-Shabaab territory are alleged to be driving the population into the flood path. The case involves a mother of six in a town under attack, highlighting the intersection of military operations and climate-related displacement.

Limitations

The evidence is limited to a single account from a mother describing constant drone attacks and the rapid rise of the River Juba. The intent of the airstrikes and the broader military strategy are not confirmed. The article does not provide additional background on the scale of the floods or the extent of the military campaign beyond this specific incident.
