Briefings

A user named Matthew Haynes announced that 'coding is solved' via a Gemma 4 E2B fine-tuned model called CRAP, which generates working ELF binaries for x86 Linux programs without traditional compilers or assemblers. The model, v1.1, was trained on 20/23 legacy exit codes and 26/40 novel strings, scoring 109/144 against a full f16 model. It runs in a browser via WebGPU, though performance varies by browser and hardware. The demo loads a 3.6 GiB GGUF model and streams hex data to the user's machine.

Key points

• The model CRAP (Compiler Replacement for Assembling Programs) generates working ELF binaries for x86 Linux programs by directly writing the binary, bypassing traditional compilers and assemblers.
• v1.1 achieved 109/144 accuracy against a full f16 model, with 26/40 novel strings handled correctly and 10/12 multi-turn tasks completed successfully.

Context

Matthew Haynes shared this finding on Reddit and Hugging Face, claiming it revolutionizes computer science by eliminating the need for software compilation tools. The model is available for fine-tuning and evaluation, with a public paper and code repository provided for researchers and developers interested in the technical implementation.

Limitations

The demo is limited to x86 Linux binaries that print and exit; other programs remain unsupported. Performance varies by browser and hardware, with Firefox noted as slow. Gradient descent optimization did not always align with task completion, as evidenced by a training run that failed on 11 of 12 trained exit codes despite hitting 0.038 loss. Browser compatibility is not fully tested, and the model's behavior on non-printing programs remains undefined.
