Briefings

The Alentejo region launched the Portugal Legends Championship at the Pinheirinho Golf Course in October 2026, featuring 60 international participants and a €450,000 prize. Carlos Abade, Portugal's Tourism President, aims to use the event to grow the sport globally and attract talent like Cristiano Ronaldo, while Vic Properties invested €1.7 million in the course's development. The tournament marks the first public opening of the 15-year-old course, which previously only hosted invited guests.

Key points

• The Portugal Legends Championship at Pinheirinho Golf Course features 60 participants from 15 nationalities, with a €450,000 prize for the winner.
• Carlos Abade, Portugal's Tourism President, aims to use the tournament to grow the sport globally and attract talent like Cristiano Ronaldo.

Context

The Alentejo region aims to convert itself into a major destination for golf, similar to the Algarve. The event is part of a broader strategy to combat tourism seasonality and generate year-round value. The course is part of a larger 400-hectare development project by Vic Properties.

Limitations

Data on golf practice growth in the Alentejo for the first half of 2026 is from Turismo de Portugal, which notes a 25.2% increase but also a 0.7% decrease in the Algarve. The specific impact of the tournament on the Pinheirinho course is only assessed after its completion, and future tournament locations in Cascais and the Algarve are not yet confirmed.
