Briefings

A Nigerian coastal community at Ayetoro faces severe erosion and habitat loss, with migratory bird populations declining as wetland land is submerged. The study documents submerged landmarks and declining bird presence, noting that the site serves as a critical wintering ground for species like Eurasian curlews and sandpipers. Monitoring efforts by the Nigerian Conservation Foundation and the Climate-Resilient East Atlantic Flyway project reveal that coastal erosion has advanced over 10 meters annually between 2010 and 2020, threatening the survival of billions of birds annually.

Key points

• Coastal erosion at Ayetoro, Nigeria, has advanced an average of more than 10 meters per year between 2010 and 2020.
• The site serves as a vital wintering ground for migratory waterbirds including Eurasian curlews, whimbrels, and common sandpipers.

Context

This article documents the impact of coastal erosion on a Nigerian wetland that functions as a critical stopover and wintering site for migratory waterbirds. The study highlights the intersection of human monitoring efforts and environmental degradation, with the Nigerian Conservation Foundation tracking bird populations to inform broader climate-resilient management strategies across the Atlantic Flyway.

Limitations

Evidence is limited to a single site in Nigeria; broader regional patterns or long-term bird population trends beyond the 2010-2020 erosion period are not covered. The study relies on volunteer counts and photographic evidence, which may have sampling biases, and does not include data on non-migratory species or human impacts beyond erosion.
