Briefings

OpenAI released three major scientific discoveries on October 26, 2026, including a new method for smoothing the Euclidean wave equation. For computer science and physics, external experts acted as 'shepherds' guiding the AI output, whereas for the math problem, OpenAI advised researchers to interpret the results independently. The findings were published on GitHub, with the full story available on The Verge.

Key points

OpenAI released three major scientific discoveries on October 26, 2026, including a new method for smoothing the Euclidean wave equation.

For computer science and physics, external experts acted as 'shepherds' guiding the AI output, while for the math problem, OpenAI advised researchers to interpret the results independently.

Context

OpenAI previously released hundreds of manuscripts containing solutions to long-standing mathematics questions. This follows a similar pattern where OpenAI announced major discoveries, but this time it chose to have external experts guide the results in computer science and physics, while for the math problem it advised it to release the AI output for researchers to work through their own explanations.

Limitations

Evidence is limited to the article snippet provided, which does not include the full GitHub repository content or the specific details of the external experts' guidance process. The source is a single article from October 2026, and the full story is available on The Verge, but the snippet does not contain the complete research details or the full list of discoveries.
