Briefings

On October 23, 2025, Mongabay highlighted how innovative science, climate-ready habitat, and community-centered conservation are fostering coexistence between humans and snow leopards in Nepal. A 2025 government survey recorded approximately 397 snow leopards in Nepal, while a separate study confirmed that snow leopards, common leopards, and Himalayan wolves coexist in Nepal's Lapchi Valley by targeting different prey species. Community conservation efforts focus on addressing human-wildlife conflict rather than solely counting carnivores, as maintaining wild prey populations prevents predators from shifting toward livestock, which triggers retaliatory killings.

Key points

• A 2025 government survey recorded approximately 397 snow leopards living in Nepal.
• Snow leopards, common leopards, and Himalayan wolves coexist in Nepal's Lapchi Valley by targeting different prey species.

Context

Snow leopards face threats from climate change, declining wild prey, and retaliatory killings from local herders. International Snow Leopard Day on October 23, 2025, focuses on recent Mongabay reporting about innovative science, climate-ready habitat, and community-centered conservation efforts in Nepal.

Limitations

Evidence is limited to a 2025 government survey and a separate study published earlier in 2025. No additional background context or future forecasts are provided in the source material.
