Briefings

Brazilian Workers Party leader Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva emerged as the 'comeback kid' after trailing in the first round of the presidential runoff, becoming the first candidate since the 1980s to win after a deficit. He overcame a 2.2 million vote loss against Flavio Bolsonaro, a far-right candidate, to secure a 4.4 million vote victory in a race where most federal and state races had already broken conservative ways. This occurred just two days shy of his 81st birthday.

Key points

• Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva became the first candidate since Brazil's return to democracy in the 1980s to win the presidential runoff after trailing in the first round.
• Lula overcame a 2.2 million vote deficit against Flavio Bolsonaro to secure a 4.4 million vote victory in a race where most federal and state races had already broken conservative ways.

Context

This finding matters because it marks a significant shift in Brazilian electoral history, showing a Workers Party leader overcoming a substantial deficit to win a major runoff race just two days shy of his 81st birthday.

Limitations

Evidence covers only the specific presidential runoff race; no data on other federal or state races is provided. The source does not specify the exact date of the first round, only that it was two days before the runoff. The article does not provide causal analysis of how Lula won, only the outcome of the vote counts.
