Briefings

European defense and commercial space startups are accelerating in-space security capabilities, with PAVE Space launching a demo IBEX spacecraft as early as February 2028. PAVE, founded in 2024, completed its first hardware in October 2024 and has conducted 21 test campaigns. Other startups like Astroscale UK and Lodestar Space are also developing defense payloads, with PAVE's aggressive timeline signaling a shift toward commercial-led space security. The mission aims to validate IBEX's ability to host defense payloads and move assets between LEO and GEO.

Key points

• PAVE Space announced a demo mission for its IBEX spacecraft scheduled for February 2028, designed to host defense payloads for on-orbit reconnaissance and capture operations.
• PAVE completed its first hardware in October 2024 after a four-month design and delivery process, having already conducted 21 test campaigns on its avionics and navigation systems.

Context

European space defense capabilities are accelerating, driven by recent military maneuvers and a strategic directive to bolster startup ecosystems. PAVE Space's rapid timeline signals a broader trend where commercial entities are competing for defense contracts to secure future in-space assets.

Limitations

Specific launch dates for other startups like Astroscale UK and Lodestar Space are not confirmed; PAVE's customer and launcher details remain undisclosed. Long-term plans for IBEX and LYOBA beyond 2029 are not detailed in the source.
