Briefings

Shield Space launched the UK Space Superiority Coalition to create a commercially led space defense force, bringing together six UK-based companies including AstroAnalytica and Goonhilly. The initiative aims to develop autonomous interceptors and swarm capabilities to deter Russian aggression, with CEO Graeme Ritchie emphasizing the need to demonstrate red lines to adversaries. The coalition's first proposed mission, Project SPEAR, targets non-kinetic effects like ASATs and DA-ASATs, though full government greenlit approval remains pending.

Key points

• Shield Space launched the UK Space Superiority Coalition on October 28, 2026, uniting six UK-based space defense companies including AstroAnalytica and Goonhilly.
• CEO Graeme Ritchie stated the coalition aims to demonstrate red lines to adversaries through autonomous interceptors and swarm capabilities to deter Russian aggression.

Context

The coalition was announced in the same month as a Russian satellite conducted an orbital overflight near an ICEYE satellite operating over Ukraine, prompting UK Space Superiority Coalition cofounder Dan Molland to highlight the scarcity of Western options for orbital threats.

Limitations

The coalition's first proposed mission, Project SPEAR, has not yet received government greenlit approval. Specific details on the 'effectors' are still being developed, and the coalition initially targets non-kinetic capabilities rather than full kinetic effects.
