Briefings
A recent study indicates Madagascar's largest fruit bat, the Malagasy flying fox (Pteropus rufus), is shrinking over the past 150 years, potentially due to selective hunting. Researchers from the Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago analyzed 121 skull and tooth specimens collected between 1870 and 2025. The study found that bat skulls became significantly smaller since 1980, while teeth remained unchanged, suggesting hunters target larger individuals for meat. The research was led by Emily Cornelius Ruhs and Steve Goodman, with findings published in Mongabay.
Key points
- The Malagasy flying fox (Pteropus rufus) is the largest fruit bat in Madagascar and serves as a key pollinator and seed disperser.
- Skull measurements of 121 specimens show a significant reduction in size since 1980, while tooth measurements remained constant, indicating selective hunting of larger individuals.
Context
This research addresses a critical conservation issue where commercial and subsistence hunting of bats is intensifying. The study provides empirical evidence linking human activity to physical changes in a flagship species, highlighting the need for targeted conservation strategies to protect pollinators and seed dispersers.
Limitations
Data covers only 121 specimens collected between 1870 and 2025, limiting generalizability. The study does not account for all factors influencing bat size, such as habitat loss or climate change, and cannot confirm causality between hunting and size reduction.
