Briefings

European AI leaders argue against chasing the most advanced models, instead prioritizing practical applications of existing AI across traditional sectors. Sofia Marta of Google Cloud and Arlindo Oliveira from INESC emphasize that Europe's fragmentation in legislation and culture hinders scale, while also noting significant cloud adoption gaps in Portugal compared to OECD averages. They advocate for strategic cooperation with the US and infrastructure interoperability to boost economic impact.

Key points

• European leaders advocate for prioritizing practical AI applications over developing the most advanced models, citing fragmentation in legislation and culture as barriers to scale.
• Cloud adoption in Portugal stands at 38%, significantly below the OECD average of 54%, prompting calls to accelerate investment in AI and data infrastructure.

Context

The briefing comes from Transatlantic Talks, a podcast celebrating the 75th anniversary of the ECO and Amcham Portugal. It features interviews with Google Cloud Portugal's country manager and INESC president discussing AI strategy, contrasting European challenges with US and Chinese approaches.

Limitations

Evidence is limited to a single podcast interview and does not include direct data from the US or China. Specific investment figures for European AI projects are not provided, though Sword project success is mentioned as an example.
