Briefings
The UK Space Agency selected ClearSpace, a UK-based in-orbit servicing startup, to lead its first active debris removal mission launching in 2029. The contract valued at approximately £61M ($81M) involves two UK-registered defunct satellites in Low Earth Orbit using robotic claws. While the mission focuses on debris removal, it also aims to demonstrate capabilities for in-orbit servicing and inspection. Liz Lloyd, UKSA's under-secretary, stated the mission protects modern life, while Alice Bunn noted it supports a sustainable future for space activities.
Key points
- UKSA selected ClearSpace as the prime contractor for its first active debris removal (ADR) mission launching in 2029.
- The mission involves two UK-registered defunct satellites in Low Earth Orbit using giant robotic claws.
Context
The UK Space Agency is launching its first active debris removal mission to remove two defunct satellites from Low Earth Orbit. This mission, valued at approximately £61M ($81M), will require ClearSpace to demonstrate new capabilities including in-orbit inspection, proximity operations, and the capture and relocation of unprepared objects. The agency aims to position the UK as a leader in global space debris removal efforts.
Limitations
Evidence is limited to the agency's announcement of the contract selection and the mission's stated objectives. Specific dates for the mission launch beyond 2029 are not confirmed, and no data on the number of satellites removed or the exact technical specifications of the robotic claws is provided.
