Briefings
A 2026 study published in Climate and Development examines climate migrants in informal settlements in southwestern Bangladesh, finding that relocation to secondary cities does not guarantee safety. The research highlights that while migration is often seen as an adaptive strategy to avoid hazards, urban planning failures and lack of social protection leave migrants exposed to risks. Key data indicates 2.4 million people were displaced in 2024 alone, with projections suggesting over one-seventh of Bangladesh's land area could be lost by 2050.
Key points
- In 2024, 2.4 million people were displaced in Bangladesh due to disasters, while rising seas could eliminate over one-seventh of the country's land area by 2050.
- A new study published in Climate and Development found that moving away from hazard zones does not ensure safety, as urban planning and social protection systems often fail to accommodate climate-displaced people.
Context
Climate migrants in Bangladesh often relocate to secondary cities as an adaptive strategy to avoid hazards like flooding and cyclones. However, this study reveals that these cities may not be equipped to support a safer future, leaving migrants more exposed to risks despite the intent to escape danger.
Limitations
The study covers only southwestern Bangladesh and focuses on informal settlements. It does not provide data on specific migration pathways, long-term outcomes, or the effectiveness of local social protection systems. The research is based on a single published article and does not include preprint data or additional field studies.
