Briefings
Researchers developed a theory proving that globally driven quantum systems can achieve universal control by breaking mirror symmetry. In a Rydberg-atom experiment, optimized pulses created an effective three-atom ZXZ interaction in an eight-atom chain, revealing topological edge mode signatures. The study by Hong-Ye Hu and colleagues is forthcoming in Nature Physics, with a preprint available for review.
Key points
- A theory identifies that globally driven quantum systems require breaking mirror symmetry to achieve universal control.
- Optimized global pulses created an effective three-atom ZXZ interaction in an eight-atom chain, revealing topological edge mode signatures.
Context
Quantum simulators often use small numbers of laser fields acting on every atom simultaneously. This shared control raises the question of whether a device controlled globally can perform a full range of quantum operations beyond its hardware's built-in interactions. This study provides a mathematical answer by proving a precise rule for one-dimensional qubit chains.
Limitations
The evidence is limited to a single Rydberg-atom experiment with an eight-atom chain. The study is still in the preprint phase, and the specific timescale for random global pulses spreading quantum information remains a numerical suggestion rather than a confirmed result.
