Briefings
The filmmaker attended a screening of the documentary 'You Can See Everything,' which explores the life of Elizabeth Holmes and her company Theranos. The film provides an intimate look at Holmes' interactions with her partner Billy Evans and her children, highlighting her attempts to reframe her narrative despite her fraud. The documentary serves as a reminder that even in biotech, not all scientific claims can be verified, as evidenced by the lack of peer-reviewed data and the prevalence of preprints and untested devices.
Key points
- Elizabeth Holmes founded Theranos at age 19 in 2003 and raised hundreds of millions of dollars, with the company valued at $9 billion in 2014.
- Holmes was sentenced to over 11 years in prison in 2022 for massive fraud and began serving her sentence in May 2023.
Context
This briefing covers the documentary 'You Can See Everything,' which examines the Theranos scandal. The film offers a rare, unscripted perspective on Holmes' personal life and her manipulative tactics, contrasting with the public record of her fraud. It underscores the difficulty journalists face in verifying scientific claims without peer review.
Limitations
The evidence is limited to the filmmaker's personal experience at the screening and the documentary's narrative. Specific details about the film's plot points, such as the exact nature of the 'super close-ups' or specific scenes with Billy Evans, are not detailed in the source. The filmmaker admits uncertainty about Holmes' motives and the film's ability to fully resolve the case.
