Briefings
A New Mexico jury found Meta guilty of nearly 44 million violations of state consumer protection laws, resulting in a $25 billion fine. This is the largest fine ever imposed on Meta, surpassing an $18 billion settlement reached with other state attorneys general. The fine was imposed after Attorney General Raúl Torrez declined to join the broader multistate settlement, citing a lack of a clear 'bright line rule' for penalties. The decision follows a period of repeated and willful deception by Meta regarding user data control since 2010.
Key points
- Meta paid a $25 billion fine to New Mexico for nearly 44 million violations of state consumer protection laws.
- The $25 billion fine is the largest ever imposed on Meta, exceeding the $18 billion settlement reached with other state attorneys general.
Context
Meta reached an $18 billion settlement with attorneys general in nearly all states earlier this year. However, New Mexico Attorney General Raúl Torrez declined to join this broader multistate agreement, leading to a separate, larger fine. The decision was made by US district court judge Francis J. Mathew, who noted there was no clear 'bright line rule' for determining appropriate penalties for Meta's repeated and willful deception of users since 2010.
Limitations
The evidence is limited to a single state fine and does not reflect the full scope of Meta's violations across all states. The specific legal reasoning regarding the 'bright line rule' remains unexplained by the provided text. The fine amount is fixed at $25 billion, but the exact calculation methodology is not detailed in the source.
