Briefings

Spanish unions announced a general strike on November 11, 2026, as the day before national legislative elections. The strike, a 24-hour pause, aims to demand dignified housing and is the first one called by major unions in 14 years. It faces criticism from opposition parties and business groups who view it as politically motivated rather than purely labor-related.

Key points

• Spanish unions UGT and CCOO announced a 24-hour general strike on November 11, 2026, to demand dignified housing and access to homes.
• The strike is the first major one called by these two unions in 14 years, occurring just before national legislative elections scheduled for November 29, 2026.

Context

The strike was called by the Confederation of Tenants (Confederação de Sindicatos de Inquilinas) and mobilized thousands of people since September 23. It follows a 2012 strike by the same unions and is linked to the broader political context of the Spanish government's housing policies under Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez.

Limitations

Evidence covers only the announcement of the strike date and duration. It does not include specific participant numbers, exact locations of protests, or detailed economic data on housing prices. Opposition parties' specific criticisms and the government's response are mentioned but not quantified.
