Briefings
Scientists at the University of Massachusetts have developed a method to harvest energy from human cells to power wearables and implants, addressing battery limitations in biohybrid devices. The research leverages inherent chemical, mechanical, and electrical energy within the body to generate power for external devices. This breakthrough aims to enable continuous operation of implantable electronics without bulky external batteries.
Key points
- Researchers at the University of Massachusetts successfully developed a method to harvest energy from human cells for powering wearables and implants.
- The system utilizes inherent chemical, mechanical, and electrical energy within the body to generate power for external devices.
Context
This research addresses the critical need for reliable power sources in biohybrid devices, as current batteries are bulky and prone to depletion. The University of Massachusetts team has created a solution that harnesses the body's natural energy to enable continuous operation of implantable electronics.
Limitations
The evidence is limited to a research article published in October 2026. Specific performance metrics, energy output rates, or long-term durability data are not provided. The study represents a conceptual breakthrough rather than a fully validated clinical application.
