Briefings

A European Union reports that the current summer was the hottest on record, resulting in 50,000 deaths. This finding comes alongside a significant financial cost for the European Union, with President André Ventura spending nearly 4 million euros on the presidential campaign. The data represents a snapshot from October 2026, capturing the immediate aftermath of the heatwave. The evidence does not specify the exact geographic regions affected or the precise timeline of the heatwave's progression, limiting the ability to trace the full causal chain from the initial temperature spike to the final death toll.
