Briefings
Abras reports a 6.5% increase in Brazil's food retail sales during the first two weeks following the September 25, 2026, prohibition of bets. The data covers October 5-18, 2026, showing regional variations from 4% in the Grande Rio de Janeiro region to 10.6% in the Southern region. The association attributes this growth to the ban, noting a 10% drop in PIX transactions as reported by the Central Bank. The study is based on internal data from supermarkets and is presented as a preprint with significant uncertainty regarding long-term trends.
Key points
- Food retail sales in Brazil increased by 6.5% in the first two weeks after the September 25, 2026, ban on bets, with the Southern region showing the highest growth at 10.6%.
- The association attributes the consumption surge to the prohibition of bets, citing a 10% reduction in PIX transactions as reported by the Central Bank of Brazil.
Context
The findings come from the Association of Brazilian Supermarkets (Abras), analyzing sales data from October 5-18, 2026, following the publication of Medida Provisória 1394/2026 on September 25, 2026. The study is presented as a preprint with significant uncertainty about long-term trends and does not include external validation.
Limitations
Data covers only two weeks (October 5-18, 2026) and is limited to internal supermarket sales figures. Regional breakdowns are incomplete, and the association explicitly states the data is a preprint with significant uncertainty regarding long-term trends and external validation.
