Briefings
The Northeast faces a heating oil crisis driven by the war with Iran and disruptions to the Strait of Hormuz, pushing prices to $6/gallon and a 50% increase in costs for low-income households. With 82% of homes burning oil and the LIHEAP program facing a $3.8 billion shortfall, families are scrambling for alternatives like wood stoves or weatherizing, while state emergency declarations and congressional funding requests highlight the severity of the situation.
Key points
- Heating oil prices in the Northeast have risen to $6 per gallon, a 50% increase projected by the National Energy Assistance Directors Association for low-income households.
- The LIHEAP program faces a $3.8 billion shortfall due to high fuel costs, prompting state emergency declarations and calls for additional congressional funding.
Context
The Northeast's heating crisis stems from the ongoing war with Iran, which has disrupted the Strait of Hormuz and Ukrainian strikes on Russian refineries, driving prices up. With 82% of homes burning oil and the LIHEAP program facing a $3.8 billion shortfall, families are scrambling for alternatives like wood stoves or weatherizing, while state emergency declarations and congressional funding requests highlight the severity of the situation.
Limitations
Evidence covers the Northeast's reliance on heating oil, fuel prices, and LIHEAP program status. It does not include data on specific household spending, regional price variations beyond Vermont and Maine, or the impact of the EI Niño weather pattern on local heating needs.
