Briefings
The Guardian's editors Hilary Osborne and Heather Stewart responded to reader questions about energy prices, tax thresholds, and economic pressures. They explained that landlords cannot legally pass higher tax bills to tenants, though market forces may limit this. The Office for Budget Responsibility noted a potential steady rise in rents due to recent policy changes. The article highlights a debate over whether rent income should be taxed more heavily than work income, noting Labour strategists deny this proposal. It also questions whether the government should have abandoned manifesto promises regarding public finances, citing the impact of the Iran war on interest costs.
