Briefings
A UN-backed Pre-COP summit in Fiji focused on Pacific island states' climate crisis, with leaders emphasizing the urgent need to protect coastal areas and secure climate finance. The event highlighted the Pacific's unique role as a global custodian of nearly 20% of Earth's surface, though many nations felt their voices were underrepresented compared to global powers. Key priorities included strengthening coastal defenses, reforming access to climate funds, and integrating ocean governance into UN negotiations, with a joint letter signed by 105 nations calling for ocean-based solutions to be central to climate policy.
Key points
- The Pacific Islands Forum chair, Surangel Whipps Jr, stated that Pacific states are custodians of nearly 20% of Earth's surface, an area larger than Russia, China, the United States, Canada, Brazil, and Australia combined.
- The Pacific Resilience Facility, established by the Pacific Islands Forum, is seeking USD 500 million in investments, with Fiji pledging USD 10 million to reach a total of around USD 190 million.
Context
The Pacific Pre-COP was a special UN event held in Fiji earlier this month, attended by 4,000 people including national leaders and international finance officials. It focused on the urgent need to protect coastal areas and secure climate finance, with Pacific leaders emphasizing that the 1.5C temperature goal is a survival threshold rather than an abstract target.
Limitations
Evidence is limited to a single UN-backed Pre-COP summit in Fiji in early October 2026. Specific details on the exact number of attendees beyond the 4,000 figure, the precise financial breakdowns of pledges beyond the stated totals, and the long-term impact of the Taku Pakasoa Declaration are not fully detailed in the provided text.
