Briefings
A Philippine fishing village in Malolos, Bulacan, implemented a nature-based coastal defense system using bamboo cribs, oyster shells, and coconut husks to mitigate flood risks from the southwest monsoon and typhoons. The project covers 14 hectares of interlocking structures designed to reduce wave energy and trap sediment, though the article notes the concrete breakwater remains insufficient for long-term protection.
Key points
- The village of Pamarawan in Malolos, Bulacan, Philippines, implemented a nature-based coastal defense project using locally sourced bamboo cribs, oyster shells, and coconut husks to protect against southwest monsoon and typhoon surges.
- The project covers 14 hectares (35 acres) of interlocking bamboo structures that trap drifting mud and sand, with sediment accumulation expected to gradually raise the seabed height over time.
Context
Residents of Pamarawan, a low-lying fishing village on North Manila Bay, previously faced severe flooding during the southwest monsoon (hagabat) and typhoons, with waves exceeding the existing 3-4 meter concrete breakwater. This article reports on the construction of a new nature-based coastal defense system as an alternative to traditional concrete structures.
Limitations
The evidence is limited to a single article from Mongabay dated September 28, 2026, which describes the project's design and materials but does not provide data on long-term effectiveness, operational costs, or community impact assessments.
