Briefings
New research indicates that commodity crops are consuming nearly 2 million acres of North American grasslands annually, a trend driven by production agriculture despite the region's status as a major carbon sink. The study highlights the scale of land loss, noting that this area is often described as near-mythical in its size, yet it is being actively plowed under by major crops like corn, soybeans, and wheat. This ongoing conversion represents a significant environmental shift, reducing the land available for natural regeneration and carbon storage. The data suggests that without intervention, the rate of grassland loss will continue to increase as agricultural demand persists.
Key points
- Commodity crops are consuming nearly 2 million acres of North American grasslands annually, primarily for corn, soybeans, and wheat.
- The study identifies this land loss as a significant environmental shift, reducing the area available for natural regeneration and carbon storage.
Context
North American grasslands are recognized as vast carbon-storing regions, yet they face ongoing conversion by agricultural production. This research highlights the scale of land loss, noting that this area is often described as near-mythical in its size, yet it is being actively plowed under by major crops like corn, soybeans, and wheat.
Limitations
The evidence is limited to a single research study published in 2026, which provides current estimates of annual acreage loss. The specific geographic scope of the 2 million acres is not fully defined, and the study does not account for historical land use changes or future projections beyond its publication date.
