Briefings
In August 2026, West Kalimantan Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BKSDA) and Yayasan Inisiasi Alam Rehabilitasi Indonesia (YIARI) jointly rescued 53 Bornean orangutans from forest fires in Ketapang, Indonesia. Veterinarian Komara treated a rescued female and her baby at Pelang village on September 18, 2026. The province burned 48,536 hectares in 2026, with fires threatening the only orangutan species on Borneo. This report highlights the urgent need for conservation efforts amid escalating habitat destruction.
Key points
- Between August 1 and October 21, 2026, 53 Bornean orangutans were rescued from fires through joint emergency operations by BKSDA and YIARI.
- Veterinarian Komara treated a female orangutan and her baby after being rescued from a burned forest and peatland area in Pelang village, Ketapang Regency, West Kalimantan, Indonesia, on September 18, 2026.
Context
Bornean orangutans are critically endangered and the only orangutan species found on Borneo. Fires destroy habitats, reduce food, and cut off movement paths, making conservation efforts urgent.
Limitations
Evidence covers only August to October 2026 in West Kalimantan. Data on total 2026 provincial burn area is incomplete. No additional background context or author details are provided beyond the article title and Mongabay publication.
