Briefings

A Portuguese government claims parental leave costs 230 million euros annually, while the Parliament's services state this figure represents a maximum limit rather than a central estimate. The evidence indicates a discrepancy between the official budget figure and the parliamentary interpretation of the spending limit.

Key points

• The Portuguese government cites a 230 million euro annual cost for parental leave as a definitive budget figure.
• Parliamentary services classify the 445 million euro total as a maximum limit, not a central estimate.

Context

This budget dispute highlights a significant disagreement between the executive and legislative bodies regarding the financial scope of parental leave provisions in Portugal.

Limitations

Evidence is limited to a single source stating the 230 million euro figure is a maximum limit, with no confirmation of whether this represents the actual average cost or the true central estimate.
