Briefings

NASA is launching a $150,000 challenge to develop solutions for the Lunar Grounding Challenge, a critical risk where astronauts in Permanently Shadowed Regions (PSRs) accumulate high negative voltage, creating dangerous electrostatic discharge risks upon re-entry to landers. The simulation involves astronauts traversing the lunar South Pole, where tribocharging and plasma charging generate significant electric charge, which must be neutralized before contact with the spacecraft to prevent suit degradation, electronic damage, and lethal shocks.

Key points

The Lunar Grounding Challenge requires innovative designs to neutralize high negative potential in Permanently Shadowed Regions (PSRs) where astronauts accumulate charge from triboelectric and plasma charging.

The challenge is open for submissions between October 5, 2026, and January 15, 2027, with an award of up to $150,000 for successful solutions.

Context

This briefing covers a NASA-sponsored simulation focused on the Lunar Grounding Challenge, where astronauts in the lunar South Pole face extreme voltage risks due to the lack of natural mechanisms to bleed accumulated charge. The event involves preparing for next moonwalk simulations and underwater testing, with a focus on electrostatic discharge mitigation before direct astronaut-lander interaction.

Limitations

Evidence is limited to a single article from October 2026 detailing the challenge's scope, prize structure, and submission timeline. Specific technical solutions, test results, or outcomes are not provided; the article describes the problem and opportunity rather than reporting on completed research or final results.
