Briefings
A 2026 report highlights a surge in Filipino interest in solar power following the Gulf conflict, with many families installing systems to offset skyrocketing electricity costs. However, despite high adoption rates and rising interest, many lower-income households remain priced out due to high upfront costs relative to minimum wages. Key figures include a 145% year-on-year increase in solar panel imports from China in 2026, median household spending at 12% of monthly income, and a 16% rise in Meralco rates from January to June 2026. While some urban communities like SM-ZOTO have successfully reduced bills through solar, the average Filipino still faces significant financial barriers to adoption.
Key points
- In June 2026, a 12.6-kilowatt solar system installed by Salvador Badilles in Las Piñas saved PHP 20,000 (USD 315) monthly, offsetting gas and electric costs.
- Interest in solar power surged with a 145% year-on-year increase in solar panel imports from China between March and May 2026, reaching 170% weekly rooftop installations.
Context
The Philippines faces a severe energy crisis exacerbated by the Gulf conflict, leading to skyrocketing electricity rates. Solar adoption has accelerated since late February, with 245 megawatts of residential installations outpacing commercial capacity. However, high upfront costs relative to minimum wages prevent widespread adoption among lower-income urban populations.
Limitations
Official figures for total rooftop solar capacity remain unverified as of June 2026. Data on rural adoption and specific impact on rural electrification is limited. The analysis relies on a single Reuters report and a New Energy Nexus survey, with no independent verification of the 145% import increase or the 16% rate increase.
