Briefings
Experts warn that over 350,000 synthetic chemicals were registered in 2020 with minimal data on their health effects, creating a significant gap in understanding emerging risks. Philip Landrigan, director of the Program for Global Public Health and the Common Good at Boston College, describes the situation as an 'iceberg' where most chemical hazards remain hidden as proprietary trade secrets. Only 30-40 chemicals have been studied for health effects, and fewer than 50 have been banned in the U.S. in the last 50 years, highlighting the urgent need for a global assessment framework.
Key points
- As of 2020, an estimated 350,000 synthetic chemicals were registered for production globally, with the vast majority having little to no known health effects.
- Only 30-40 of these chemicals have been studied for health effects, and fewer than 50 have been banned in the U.S. in the last 50 years.
Context
A public health physician from Boston College notes that while the chemical industry has a long history of releasing new synthetics with little caution, the evidence base for toxicity is often incomplete. This gap in knowledge is critical because the majority of synthetic chemicals remain unregulated and their health impacts are largely unknown.
Limitations
The evidence is limited to a 2020 snapshot of registered chemicals, and the study relies on expert testimony rather than comprehensive clinical data. The specific health effects for the 30-40 chemicals studied are not detailed, and the full scope of global chemical risks remains unquantified.
