Briefings
A Linux Plumbers Conference microconference in Prague focused on sched_ext scheduling, covering priority inversion, time slice extension, proxy execution with BPF, and paravirtualized scheduling. Key topics included device-aware scheduling using Intel HFI hardware feedback. The report details technical challenges and proposed solutions for modernizing Linux scheduling.
Key points
- The Linux Plumbers Conference microconference in Prague focused on sched_ext scheduling, with priority inversion and time slice extension as primary discussion topics.
- Paravirtualized scheduling was proposed as a solution, allowing host and guest schedulers to cooperate across VM boundaries with sched_ext as the policy engine.
Context
The Linux Plumbers Conference blog published a report from the sched_ext microconference held in Prague in October 2026. This event addressed critical scheduling challenges including priority inversion, time slice extension, and integration of BPF schedulers, alongside advanced paravirtualized scheduling approaches.
Limitations
Evidence is limited to the microconference report from the Linux Plumbers Conference blog. Specific implementation details, performance metrics, or deployment results are not provided. The report outlines technical concepts and proposed solutions without confirming their practical application or success.
