Briefings

Brazilian debt risk reached 20.3 million in June 2026, a 75% increase over five years, according to the Central Bank's Financial Stability Report. The 17% of the national debt system represented by this group is expected to consume 42% of income for those earning up to two minimum wages, with 15% of that income going to credit card debt. The Central Bank plans new measures to limit aggressive credit offers and requires prior authorization for vulnerable consumers, effective March 2027.

Key points

• The Central Bank reported 20.3 million Brazilians in risk of debt in June 2026, representing a 75% rise since June 2021.
• For households earning up to two minimum wages, 42% of their income is consumed by debt payments in June 2026.

Context

The Central Bank's Financial Stability Report tracks Brazil's debt risk, highlighting that 17% of the national debt system is held by these vulnerable consumers. The report notes that credit card debt consumption increased across all salary brackets, with the top 10% of earners consuming 18.6% of their income in debt.

Limitations

The data reflects June 2026 figures and is based on the Central Bank's report. The classification criteria for debt risk are defined by the Central Bank, and the specific impact of new regulatory measures on consumer behavior remains unmeasured.
