Briefings
A recent Grist poll from Data for Progress indicates that 58% of likely U.S. voters believe climate change will hinder their ability to achieve the American Dream over the next 20 years. This finding emerged from a survey conducted in April 2026, where respondents were asked if climate change would affect their ability to maintain their aspirations. The data highlights a significant disconnect between political rhetoric and public perception, with 42% of Republicans specifically citing climate change as a threat to the American Dream.
Key points
- 58% of likely U.S. voters believe climate change will hinder their ability to achieve the American Dream over the next 20 years.
- 42% of Republicans specifically cite climate change as a threat to achieving the American Dream.
Context
This poll, conducted by Data for Progress for Grist, reveals a growing public concern that environmental challenges may undermine the traditional American Dream narrative. The survey, which included 1,167 likely voters, suggests that climate change is viewed as a barrier to personal and economic success, prompting political discourse to reframe environmental issues as threats to the American Dream.
Limitations
The survey was conducted in April 2026 and may not reflect current conditions. Results are based on self-reported perceptions rather than objective climate data. Some respondents may have different views on the American Dream, and the survey does not account for all demographic groups or future scenarios.
