Briefings
The Brazilian government paid October Bolsa Família benefits to 19.3 million families with NIS ending in 3-0 on October 21, 2026. Due to climate change, payments were consolidated into three days instead of the usual ten. The average benefit was R$ 782.92, with total payments rising from R$ 13 billion in September to R$ 15 billion in October. Special payments included R$ 58/month for children under six, R$ 173 for children under seven, and R$ 58 for pregnant women or children aged 7-18. Families eligible for the protection rule received 50% of their right for up to two years. The Seguro Defeso discount was removed for all beneficiaries since June 2024.
Key points
- 19.3 million families received October Bolsa Família payments on October 21, 2026, with an average benefit of R$ 782.92 per family.
- Payments were consolidated into three days instead of the usual ten due to the El Niño climate phenomenon, affecting 194 municipalities across eight states including Acre, Amazonas, and São Paulo.
Context
The Bolsa Família program in Brazil pays monthly benefits to families with children under 18. Recent climate change impacts have altered payment schedules, concentrating payments into fewer days. The program includes standard benefits, variable nutritional support for young children, and a protection rule for working families. A recent law removed the Seguro Defeso discount for all beneficiaries.
Limitations
Evidence covers only October 2026 payments; data on September 2026 is unavailable. Coverage is limited to 194 municipalities across eight states, with specific lists of beneficiaries not provided. Some payment rules like the protection rule have different application periods than the current payment date.
